The simplest moving house cleaning timeline starts four weeks before moving day: declutter first, then clean the rooms you use least, book professional cleaning and any carpet or oven work in the middle weeks, and leave the kitchen, bathroom and floors for the final days. Spreading the work out stops it all landing on the day the van arrives.
Cleaning is the part of a move people tend to leave until last, and it shows. Tenants lose money from deposits, sellers hand over keys with apologies, and buyers arrive to a home that needs a scrub before they can unpack. This is the plan we suggest to customers moving across Hull and East Yorkshire, from city-centre flats to family homes in Sutton.
Adjust it if you have less time. The order of jobs matters more than the exact dates.
Key takeaways
- Declutter before you clean: everything you get rid of is one less thing to wipe, pack and move.
- Book cleaners, carpet cleaning and removals early, particularly around month-end and in summer.
- Clean high and hidden areas first; leave kitchens, bathrooms and floors until the property is empty.
- Plan for two cleans: one for the home you are leaving and one for the home you are moving into.

| Two weeks before | Bigger jobs | Oven and appliances, windows, walls and paintwork, garden and outside areas |

| Moving day and after | Final clean and move-in clean | Kitchen, bathroom and floors in the old home; cupboards, fridge and bathroom in the new one |
Four weeks before: declutter and book your help
Go through each room and decide what is coming with you. Donate, sell or recycle anything you no longer use, and book a bulky waste collection through your council if you have old furniture to get rid of. The less you move, the less you have to clean around.
This is also the week to book. Removal firms and cleaners get busy around month-end, when many tenancies finish, and through the summer. Book the final clean of your current home and, if you want the new place done before you arrive, a move-in clean for the day you get the keys.
Renters should dig out the tenancy agreement and check-in inventory now, so you know the standard expected at check-out. Our guide on how to get your full tenancy deposit back explains what matters most. If you are selling, the house still needs to look good for viewings until contracts are exchanged, and our advice on cleaning before selling your house helps keep it presentable while boxes pile up.
Three weeks before: lofts, garages and rooms you use least
Start with the spaces you can empty and finish completely: the loft, garage, shed, spare bedroom and under-stairs cupboard. Once a space is packed, clean it straight away and close the door on it.
- Hoover and wipe shelves, the loft hatch and storage cupboards as they are emptied.
- Dust high areas in spare rooms: light fittings, curtain rails, tops of wardrobes and door frames.
- Sweep out the garage and shed, and clear cobwebs from corners and windows.
- Wash any curtains and nets you are leaving behind, and take down the ones you are taking.
Doing the high-level dusting early means less dust drifting onto floors you will clean later.
Two weeks before: ovens, carpets, windows and outside
These are the jobs that take longest or may need a specialist, so get them done while there is still time to put problems right.
Oven and appliances
A dirty oven is one of the most common things flagged at check-out, and one of the slowest jobs to do yourself. Clean it now and use it lightly afterwards, or leave it for the professional clean at the end. Wipe out the microwave, clean the extractor filter and descale the kettle if it is staying.
Carpets
Book any carpet cleaning now for the day after the furniture goes, when the rooms are empty. Hot water extraction leaves carpets damp for a while, so check our guide to how long carpets take to dry and plan around it. Our carpet cleaning service can usually be combined with the final clean.
Windows, walls and outside
Wash windows on the inside, including sills and tracks. Wipe scuffs from walls and paintwork with a damp cloth, testing a small patch first. If the garden is part of your tenancy, mow, weed and clear rubbish now rather than in the last frantic days.
Moving week: run the house down as you pack
- Eat your way through the freezer and cupboards, then switch off and defrost the freezer a day or two before moving so it can drain and dry.
- Clean each room as soon as it is packed, working from the top down.
- Keep a last box of cleaning supplies, bin bags, toilet roll and the kettle off the van.
- Confirm your cleaning booking and how the cleaners will get the keys.
- Take meter readings, and photos of each room once it is clean.
Renters should leave enough time for a full clean of the empty property once the furniture has gone. Our room-by-room end of tenancy checklist covers everything an inventory clerk looks at, and our guide to how long an end of tenancy clean takes helps you plan the time realistically.
Tip: If you are leaving one rental and moving into another on the same day, book separate cleans for each address, or clean the new place the following day. Trying to do two cleans and a removal yourself in one day rarely goes well.
Moving day and the first days in your new home
On the day, the final clean of the old property starts once the van is loaded. With everything out, hoover and mop the floors, give the kitchen and bathroom a last wipe, empty the bins and check every cupboard is empty. Take dated photos as you leave.
Many of our customers book an end of tenancy clean for this stage, because our cleaners work to letting-agent and inventory checklists and come back to re-clean anything the agent flags. If you are leaving a rental in the city, see our page on end of tenancy cleaning in Hull.
At the new home, clean before you unpack: kitchen cupboards, the fridge, the bathroom and wardrobes come first. Our move-in cleaning checklist lists everything room by room.
Take the cleaning off your moving list
If the timeline looks like too much alongside work, packing and children, hand part of it over. Our move-in cleaning gets the new place ready before you arrive, and we can hold keys if you can’t be there to let us in. Cleaners are DBS-checked and insured, and every job has a fixed quote agreed before we start.
We work seven days a week across Hull, Cottingham and the rest of East Yorkshire. Send us your moving date and both addresses through our contact page and we will fit the cleans around your removal.
